Intermuscular Spaces

Overview- In this article we covered.

• Quadrangular Space
• Upper Triangular Space
• Lower Triangular Space
• Axillary Nerve
• Lower Subscapular Nerve
• Radial Nerve
• Axillary Artery branches (PCHA and Circumflex scapular artery)
• Brachial Artery branches (Profunda or Deep brachii artery)

Mnemonic- 3 Spaces, 3 Muscles, and 3 Artery.

3 SPACES:
1. Quadrangular space- Boundaries (Muscles) and content (Nerve and artery)
2. Upper triangular space- Boundaries (Muscles) and content (Nerve and artery)
3. Lower triangular space- Boundaries (Muscles) and content (Nerve and artery)

3 MUSCLES: Here in the boundaries of inter muscular spaces, we will study three muscles and that muscles are given below.

1. Teres minor muscle (supplied by axillary nerve)
2. Teres major muscle (supplied by lower subscapular nerve)
3. Triceps brachii muscle (all three head are supplied by radial nerve): It have three head- Lateral, medial and long head (LH).

3 ARTERY: Here in the content of inter muscular spaces, we will study three artery and that are given below.

1. PCHA (Posterior Circumflex Humeral Artery); branch of Axillary artery.
2. Circumflex Scapular Artery; branch of Subscapular artery.
3. Profunda or Deep Brachii Artery; branch of Brachial artery.

1. Quadrangular space-

● Boundaries: As the name itself is clear, it has four boundaries-

• Upper- formed by lower border of Teres minor muscle. (This muscle is supplied by axillary nerve).

• Lower- formed by upper border of Teres major muscle. (This muscle is supplied by Lower subscapular nerve).

• Lateral- formed by surgical neck of Humerous bone.

• Medial- formed by lateral border of long head of Triceps brachii muscle. (This muscle is supplied by Radial nerve)

● Content:
• Nerve- Axillary or circumflex Nerve (Supply to the deltoid and teres minor muscle)

• Artery- *PCHA (Posterior Circumflex Humeral Artery).

*PCHA- branch of Axillary artery.

2. Triangular space-

A. Upper Triangular space-

Boundaries– As the name itself is clear, it has three boundaries-

• Upper- formed by lower border of Teres Minor muscle. (This muscle is supplied by Axillary nerve)

• Lower- formed by Upper border of Teres major muscle. (This muscle is supplied by Lower subscapular nerve)

• Lateral- formed by medial border of long head of *Triceps brachii muscle. (This muscle is supplied by Radial nerve)

*Triceps brachii muscle- As the name itself is clear, It have three head- Lateral, medial and long head (LH) and this muscle is supplied by Radial nerve.

● Content-
• Nerve- ×

• Artery- Circumflex scapular artery (Branch of subscapular artery and subscapular artery, is the branch of Axillary artery)

(Circumflex scapular artery- You will also read this in Anastomosis around body of scapula)

B. Lower Triangular space-

● Boundaries- As the name itself is clear, it has three boundaries-

• Upper- formed by lower border of Teres major muscle. (This muscle is supplied by Lower subscapular nerve)

• Lateral- formed by medial border of Humerous bone.

• Medial- formed by lateral border of Long head of Triceps brachii muscle. (This muscle is supplied by Radial nerve)

● Content-
• Nerve- Radial Nerve; Supply to the Triceps brachii muscle (all three head- lateral, medial and Long head) and Extensor muscles of forearm.

• Artery- Profunda or Deep brachii artery; branch of Brachial artery.

(Profunda or Deep brachii artery- You will also read this in Anastomosis around elbow joint or Recurrent and collateral Anastomosis)
